Following last weeks research I have continued to invest my time in this project now, less in the content but rather in the materials. I struggled quite a bit this week, especially in turning out a prototype that was able to be cut on the bed. I worried a lot about the laser burning up my project on many occasions, given the level of detail and I even sat over the cutter and babysat it for hours.
I found several issues;
many small details were lost because of the allowance the laser left between each cut, which resulted in several areas of the design needed to be reworked because of this issue. This included the castle, which arguably is one of the most important areas of the tapestry.
I also struggled with the laser settings, with many of my prototypes barrel cutting through the paper, leaving mere scorch marks on the back end of the paper. Also, because I am limited to papers which are 2ft by 3ft in size, the weight of each paper exceeded the depth of the cut,. Overall, it took roughly three tries on the printer to get the settings correct and hours of remedying each cut with a knife.
Lastly, the overall aesthetics of the cut was also bothering my, I found that with the white paper, many small imperfections were much more visible that I would have liked, with small scorch marks and burns showing on the final product. I believe that for the first layer, which is the most detailed, I will be using black paper to reduce the appearance.
Overall, this week could have been a lot better in prototyping, I ran into constant issues, had to return to the drawing board on many occasions and spent far too much time methodically popping out the cut outs from the paper which should have been, with the proper settings, fallen straight out and onto the cutting bed.
