Surface Design Study

After some time pondering what may be an interesting thing to engrave into the wood, I began to think about the upcoming months ahead and Christmas time. I realized that it would be interesting to create some shapes and patterns that would resonate with my relatives to create some possible Christmas gifts. I eventually decided that I would use similar patterns to my texture study and create some coasters that my Croatian grandma would like.

After examining examples of Croatian woodworking, I decided to settle on a couple of designs of Kolos, and after a lot of time, I was happy with the end result.

Here was the final design in rhino that I made.

After a couple of tries with Jessica, I finally lasered my favorite item, and with a bit of wood oil, I think that the final result is absolutely stunning. What I love most is that it is almost impossible to find these sorts of things unless I went back home to Croatia, and now I have a way of embracing my culture and heritage through modern technology that is fast and efficient.

Marina Dawson: Project Proposal

Project Proposal For this upcoming deadline, I would like to create a large laser-cut tapestry on black paper that is roughly 3ft by 2ft. I would like to create imagery based on one of my favourite movies, Howl's Moving Castle, by Studio Ghibli, and laser-cut it onto paper to be hung with a poster hanger. The designs will begin from the top left and work their way down to the bottom right, as the tapestry tells the film's story with certain elements from each major scene featured in each section. I have chosen this movie because it was the first anime I watched as a kid and the catalyst for my love for the medium. With a beautiful soundtrack, a star-studded cast of voice actors, and, of course, Hayao Miyazaki's creative direction, this film is an instant classic for me. Process Blog

The beginning stages: To begin with this project I first begun searching the web for inspiration directly from the frames in the film. I enjoyed finding certain themes in the designs that stood out to me such as flowers, stars and varying celestial patterns and ornate crown molding from the castle and the towns the film was set in. Drawing from the concept art was also helpful because it allowed me to think about the bare bones of the design and how I could begin to simplify the process into rhino into a design that would not be too ornate on the cutting bed, which could run the risk of loosing details or causing a fire. In the end I decided to come up with a sketch for the first section of the tapestry, which ended up evolving several times. Project 2 proposal

I propose to create a second bespoke item, this time however I would like to learn how to use 3D scanners to CAD. I have always wanted to utilize this skill to create a highly intricate object which could become piece of fine art. I hope to create something sculptural but still obviously true to the medium of 3D printing, I do not plan to paint or sand the object. I also could be open to showcasing it as part of the graduate show this may when I convocate! My idea is foster the current research I have been doing in my drawing art practice which is about the intersections between ecology and feminism. specifically Eco-Feminism. Because of this, I would like to create 3D scans of my body, which is similar to how I also take imprints of my body in organic materials onto rag paper, and splice the scans into segments of limbs which can be hung flat on the wall.
